Window buyers post about two things: the sales visit that ran two hours and ended with a price good only tonight, and the replacement windows that leaked or drafted their first winter because they were foamed in and never flashed. When you call this site about windows, we connect you with a licensed local remodeler who measures each opening, prices per window with the brand and glass named, and installs with sill pans, flashing tape and low-expansion foam so the water that hits a Yorktown house in November stays outside. Trim inside and out is part of the job. Call (914) 228-6746.
If this sounds familiar
The free estimate that lasted eight hours
Sixty-five thousand for the house, then thirty-three if you sign tonight, and a call to the manager for a better deal. A Westchester homeowner had to ask the salesman to leave.
You get a written per-window price after the measure and you take a week with it. There is no presentation, no manager, no tonight price. The new windows are draftier than the old ones
You can see light through the cracks of the trim, the corners of the sill blow cold, and a Westchester neighbor already told you why: a direct replacement without a new wrap and air sealing still drafts.
Sill pan, flashing tape lapped over the housewrap, shims on the sides so the frame cannot bow, low-expansion foam, and interior stops set tight. Flashing keeps the water out; foam is not flashing. The trim that was not included
The windows went in and the interior casing and exterior trim were an extra nobody mentioned.
Interior and exterior trim are lines in the estimate. If they are excluded, it says so.
What window jobs go wrong on
Will they leak or draft?
Leaks come from missing flashing, not from the window. Each opening gets a sill pan and flashing tape lapped correctly, the window is set level and plumb, and gaps get low-expansion foam that does not bow the frame.
ProofFlashing method stated in the estimate. Ask to see the first window before the rest go in.
Am I being sold or being quoted?
A per-window price with the brand, the glass package and the install method named, given after measuring, valid for weeks. Compare it to anyone. No presentation, no manager call, no tonight discount.
ProofWritten per-window pricing, brand and glass named.
Insert or full-frame?
Insert replacements keep the old frame and are cheaper; full-frame replaces everything and is right when the old frame is rotten or the sill is soft. The contractor tells you which each opening needs.
ProofEach opening assessed, method stated per window.
What it costs, plainly
Windows are priced per opening, installed, with trim listed. What moves it:
| Vinyl insert replacement | The common choice: existing frame stays, new sash and frame inside it. Westchester threads put a 21-window house at about $35,000 from a local installer, against $53,000 to $65,000 from the big-brand sales companies for the same count. |
|---|
| Full-frame replacement | Old frame out, new window with nailing fin, new flashing, new trim. Right for rot and for changing the size. |
|---|
| Fiberglass or wood-clad | Better looking and longer lasting, priced above vinyl. |
|---|
| Glass package | Low-E and argon are standard now; triple pane for the north side and the bedrooms over the garage. |
|---|
| Trim | Interior casing and exterior trim or capping, listed per window. |
|---|
| Egress and new openings | Cutting a new opening or a basement egress window needs framing, a header and a permit. |
|---|
Figures are what Westchester homeowners reported, not quotes. Per-window pricing in writing after measuring, with trim, glass package and the flashing method named, and valid long enough to compare against two other installers.
Windows in Yorktown houses
The double-hung windows in a 1960s or 70s Yorktown colonial are usually wood with aluminum storms, and by now the sills on the north side under the oaks are soft. That decides insert versus full-frame opening by opening. Replacement windows in the same size need no Town of Yorktown permit; a new or larger opening or a basement egress does. Houses in the Croton watershed and near the reservoirs get more wind-driven rain, which is why flashing is not optional here. Lead-safe practices apply to pre-1978 window work because the old sash paint is disturbed.
What happens after you call
1
You call or send the form
Tell us the room, the town and what is bothering you. A person answers during business hours at (914) 228-6746.
2
We match you with one remodeler
Kitchens and whole-home work go to one licensed contractor, bathrooms to another. Each one works in your town, not from a call center.
3
They come measure and write it up
The contractor visits, measures, and gives you a written itemized estimate. You are under no obligation to book.
4
You decide
Compare it, ask questions, take your time. If you book, the contract and the work are between you and the contractor.
The smaller worries, answered
Storm doors and entry doors
The same crew replaces front doors and storm doors and flashes them the same way.
